I designed these coasters awhile ago, and they are still the most used projects in my house. These minimalist coasters work in any home with any decor and are the perfect size for mugs and glasses alike. Perfect for stash busting your cotton yarn, especially that Lily and Cream you can't seem to use up!

Note: This pattern uses US Terminology.

Materials:

  • 3.0 mm hook, 3.5mm hook for tsc border

  • Scissors and tapestry needle

  • Weight 4 yarn (preferably cotton, I used Peaches and Creme)

Abbreviations and Required Stitches:

ch - Chain

mr - Magic Ring

st sc - Stacked Single Crochet

st - Stitch

sl st - Slip Stitch

tsc - twisted single crochet

dc - Double Crochet

YO - Yarn Over

FO - Fasten Off

Additional Notes:

  • The coaster is worked in the round without turning

  • I worked 5 rounds and a border to make a coaster 5 inches in diameter. You can add or remove rounds depending on your tension and desired size. To add rounds, continue increasing 12 times per round, spacing the increases throughout.

  • Each row starts with a Stacked Single Crochet (st sc). You can choose to work a Chain 3 instead. The stacked single crochet or chain 3 counts as your first double crochet (dc) in the round.

  • In the written pattern, (X) at the end of each round indicates how many stitches you should have at the end of the round.

  • This pattern offsets the increases in later rounds to achieve a more circular coaster.

  • In the pattern, "xdc" means double crochet x number of times in the next stitch, and "dc x" means place one double crochet into each of the next x number of stitches.

the 6 steps to crocheting a minimalist coaster, including 5 rounds of double crochet and a twisted single crochet border.

To finish, I crocheted a twisted single crochet border using the 3.5mm hook, working 1 tsc in each stitch around. This creates a small lip around the coaster. You could also crochet a slip stitch border, reverse single crochet border, or no border at all.
